The Dark Knight- A Casualty of Too Many Expectations

July 18th, 2008 at 6:34 am, 10 months ago

I went and watched The Dark Knight in Evanston at midnight. Good movie. I think Ledger’s performance is a little too hyped up for its own good, and that Aaron Eckhart’s performance was way ‘under-hyped.’

I think that, had I gone into it not expecting to see a ‘great’ performance I would have probably enjoyed Ledger’s character a lot more.

I did enjoy how Nolan used Chicago in this film. He didn’t fake it up like he did in Batman Begins but rather used Chicago as… well… Chicago. I like how they took a CTA bus and filled in the C part of the logo with a G. I must have been the only person who sorta chuckled at that in the theatre.

As a whole I wasn’t all too impressed. Maybe it was just that I had been excited for so long that nothing could match my expectations. Anyone who says ‘Best Picture’ or ‘Best Supporting Actor’ is crazy. It is hardly a ‘Best Picture’-worthy movie, and as for the Ledger performance… it was good, but it was more that I enjoyed where Nolan and Ledger took the Joker character than just that Ledger was ‘amazing’ in it. I think Best Adapted Screenplay is a given for TDK, and maybe Best Director to Nolan, but to be honest I just don’t think it is worth being considered for best picture. Generally if I want something to be nominated for Best Picture, it needs to be because it has a legitimate chance at winning the damn thing, not just because they need to have x number of movies in the category.

Honestly I think the biggest disappointment I had with the film is that Ledger’s death really overshadowed so many other good things about it. I know, I know, he is dead. And that is really sad, he really was a good actor. But does that mean we should focus our attention only on his character and performance and ignore the fine performances of Aaron Eckhart and Gary Oldman? No.

Next up, Navy Pier IMAX… although it may take a few weeks for me to get a good seat down there.

Oh, and the joker has a good pen trick. You’ll have to see it.

See to them, you’re just a freak. Like me!

Alright, here is my prediction:

The Dark Knight will match or exceed the 100 million dollar mark and make it one of the biggest opening weekend of all time

I’ll be there at 12:03 AM. Too bad I couldn’t get IMAX tickets. Although I will probably go see it at IMAX over the next week or so. They are running the thing at the Navy Pier IMAX theater every 3 hours for 72 hours straight (that includes 3AM and 6AM showings Friday, Saturday and Sunday)

The Dark Knight Trailer

May 8th, 2008 at 6:24 pm, 16 months ago

I went into the theatre early yesterday to see Iron Man, knowing that there was going to be a Dark Knight trailer.

There was no Batman Dark Knight trailer.

But my friend watched Iron Man and got to see a Dark Knight trailer.

So I call them up and the guy is like “I personally put it on all three” and I am like “dude, I went early to see the freaking trailer, unless it was part of those advertisements before you start the projector there was no Dark Knight trailer” and the guy was like “Sir, I’m positive it was on there. It is required to be on all copies of Iron Man.”

So am I having amnesia, because there was no Dark Knight trailer on the reels I went to see. I specifically went early to see that freaking trailer on the big screen. I told some guys behind me that there was going to be a trailer for TDK before the lights went down. I didn’t even go for popcorn because I wanted to see this freaking trailer. There was an Indiana Jones trailer (which is cool because I want to see that movie too) but I’ve been freaking out over seeing this Batman movie all year.

I did email the Navy Pier IMAX folks asking if there was going to be a midnight showing and how early they would be selling tickets to that.

Oh, Iron Man is a great movie. Stay past the credits. Didn’t once do the “I AM IRONMAN” with the cool voice though (which is what I thought was after the credits, but something better is)

I Am Legend- Will Smith: You Amaze Me

I went out to see the new Will Smith movie I Am Legend. Let me say something: Wow.

Two things really stand out here. First off is how New York looks. The filmmakers managed to suspend disbelief in their depiction of a post apocalyptic city.

Second would have to be Smith’s performance. It isn’t something that will garner an Oscar (the movie isn’t good enough to deserve the words ‘Academy Award Winner’ on the DVD box) but… wow.

Classes are almost done

December 4th, 2007 at 10:31 am, 29 months ago

This is the last week for classes here at Loyola before finals week. And after that I have 30 days off until the next semester begins.

Finals shouldn’t be too hard. Which is good because I won’t be here on Friday/Saturday/Sunday due to Butt-numb-a-thon in Austin.

Haven’t been to Austin before, nor have I flown Southwest, so this should be a fun experience.

I am in Computer Science and the current topic is wireless networking. If this did not count as a math class I would have thrown myself out of a window by now.

In other news: This class is worth a math credit?
