Loyola’s new Information Commons

Loyola is doing this big expansion. Well, not an expansion, more of a complete overhaul of their campus. I have no problem with it, but the first real example is opening this spring: The Information Commons.

Now this is like a student library, without the books. It is three floors of work space, computers, printers, meeting rooms with multimedia capabilities (just ask for a room to work with a group and they will assign you one) and a coffee shop on the first floor. You can grab a coffee downstairs, go up to the 2nd floor and grab a table, log onto the wireless network and work. If it isn’t finals I bet you can even spread your work and books out and get some actual stuff done. But if your friends are working on the same project they can just pull a table and chairs over, hook up their laptops, and you can work through things together. Or if you have a larger group, you just get a room with a projector, hook your laptop up, and present to your group what you were thinking.

The only ‘built in’ part of the center building is a round information desk on all three floors that will assist students use the space effectively.

And there will be a brand new mac lab with the latest in technology for video editing and design.

Originally it sounded really cheesy. And the name is cheesy. “Information Commons.” Sounds like they just started throwing titles on a white-board and threw darts to pick one. But the idea is really cool.

Now lets just hope they don’t screw this up.
