The Emmy Nominations are Out, The Sopranos is going to sweep

The 2007 Emmy Awards Nominations are out

And of course, The Sopranos has entries in every category.

And it will probably win in all of those categories.

What I can’t understand is how Kiefer Sutherland (aka Jack Bauer) got a nod and Michael C. Hall (aka Dexter) did not. Dexter was by far a superior show this year and I think his acting is worthy of at least a nomination.

Not that it matters, James Gandolfini is going to get it.

And Edie Falco is going to get drama actress.

And Made in America (last sopranos episode) is going to get best writing for an episode.

And… sopranos… sopranos… sopranos…

Not that it doesn’t deserve it… it is a good series… But it would be nice to see some spice this year. It would be especially nice to see Michael Emerson (Ben from LOST) pick up a supporting actor drama win, but somehow I don’t see that happening..

Battlestar Galactica got a few nods, but they are all in categories where The Sopranos is going to take over.

Rome deserves costume/art direction. If you have seen Rome, you will know what I am talking about.

Tina Fey is going to win the writing comedy for 30 Rock (she deserves it, that show is Hilarious.)

As for the rest… bah… I don’t know. Just as long as 24 doesn’t get anything… this season was total crap.

Oh, and maybe Justin Timberlake can win Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics for “Dick in a Box.” HAH!

That is a lot of storage

July 16th, 2007 at 11:51 am, 41 months ago

Usenet is a wonderful thing…

the first message board in the world, the first example of trolling, and lately the largest repository of pirated content in the world…

Of course, people are beginning to realize this and signup for services such as Giganews that give them unlimited access to these files, at full speed… no need to upload, just pay the $$$ each month and wait for the content…

Usenet has about 3.12 Terabytes per day posted to it… Giganews useto have 70 days of storage (218TB), then they went to 100 days (312 Terabytes)… well… they are now going to 200 days…

Thats 624 Terabytes of storage…

Wow…

Now of course you need some redundancy there… so we are talking 1 Petabyte (about 1024Terabytes) of data….

Wow…

That is 2048 500GB drives… figure in massive quantities 500GB drives are $120, that’s $250k… in hard drives

Now these are serving data at hundreds of megabits per second (they peer with a bunch of internet service providers, and most people max out their broadband connections connecting to them) so you need to have multiple gigabit lines going to each server (lets assume there are 1024 servers)… thats 2048 gigabit lines… figure you need to have 1 10 gigabit ethernet lines per 10 servers… that’s 204 10gigabit lines… then you need to run them into something… hmm… Extreme Networks makes some nice gear… but the cost of one of their larger units with a bunch of 10 gigabit cards is about $200k+…

Plus power… plus replacement hard drives… (at least 10% of the drives will fail in the first year)

Wow…

It is back to Loyola for me in Fall 2007

July 14th, 2007 at 11:41 am, 41 months ago

On Monday the Department of Admissions and the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola will send me a formal letter of acceptance to attend the university this fall.

This year I have been questioning what I wanted to do with my life. I do indeed enjoy the State of Wisconsin, especially the politics here.

Over the past few months I have been telling people that it is my intention to stay in Wisconsin for this fall. For example, they should hire me because I will be here in the fall. Or they should elect me for a position because I will be here.

So was I lying? I don’t know. Would this decision have been different if those things would have happened? I’m not sure.

These things didn’t go into my thought process when I first decided to go back.

So what did?

I made a decision a few years ago that the school I wanted to go to was Loyola University Chicago. At first I was denied, rightly so, but once I showed them that there was hope for me at their university, they understood…

So why would some place that gave me the chance of the lifetime deserve to be jilted by my attendance somewhere else?

This isn’t to say that I will be at Loyola for the rest of my undergraduate career. I’m always keeping open my options every step of the way., but at this point in time, for the 2007/2008 school year, Loyola is where I need to be.

There are a few things that need to be addressed before I go back. Namely where I want to live, how I am going to pay for it and what course load I am ready for this semester.

These things will be figured out over the coming weeks. Until then, I’m switching my Facebook network back to Loyola.

Goodbye UWM

I have started a few things in motion and should have final confirmation of my fall plans over the next two weeks. Then it will be time to tell people…

Every day the iPhone gets a little cooler

Check this picture out:

What is wrong with it?

Oh yeah, the Safari application button has been moved.

Wait, moved? What?

Thats right, they got access to the iPhone filesystem.

So lets go over what you can do with the iPhone
a) Buy it without agreeing to anything (I confirmed this)
b) Activating it without signing up for phone service (or agreeing to any terms, like you can’t unlock the phone)
c) Use the features of the phone that do not require AT&T (aka they can be done either entirely on the phone or on WIFI)
d) And now: Remove, change, and add files and content to the phone..

So we get closer to my ultimate goal: Having the best wifi equipped PDA and media player in the history of man… with no monthly costs.

Until Version 1.5
