Zero 7 - Futures REVIEWED

I just got the latest Zero 7 single Futures off the internet (because they released it in the UK before they released it here, I’ll buy it literally ASAP.) A lot of people don’t know it, but Zero 7 is my favorite group. Has been since I first heard tracks from 2001’s Simple Things.

It starts with the standard Zero 7 airy guitar and misc electronic noise that seems to buzz throughout the entire track. In comes a beat that thrives throughout the track, a subtitle but vital collection that seems so familiar to any Zero 7 fan. The guitar starts to come in a few moments into the track, just before the amazing José González starts in on his lofty tone that seems to have been modified only slightly in the studio and makes the 211 bitrate of the MP3 vital. Some of his words are backed up, others are not, but every one is very vivid.

Two minutes thirty four seconds. That’s the time it all switches. Zero 7 is back, sampling González and substantially increasing the rate the song moves. I needed to look to make sure that it was the same song. It’s an amazing transition that proverbially makes me want more from the up and coming CD. A slow lofty beginning ends in perhaps the most “trance” or “dance” I have ever heard from Zero 7. I like it.

I have iTunes open, the search is “Zero 7.” As I go down the list I would have to say that Warm Sound and Somersault from When it Falls. But those seem almost too upbeat, too fast. Perhaps the title track from Simple Things represents it better. Nevertheless, it’s Zero 7. May 15 is the release date of The Garden and it’s going to be a long wait. Hopefully somebody gets an advance copy, but I’m off to pre-order it, so at least I don’t fell that bad about not giving back to a great artist.
