Dear Google, Re: Adsense

August 18th, 2005 at 12:17 am, 3 years ago

I have been putting these damn Google Adsense banners on this site for awhile now, in an attempt to make some beer money (which has not come to fruit, with only $10.45 in my account and a minimum of $100 to get a check).

As my site has gotten larger and larger, I have found that Adsense has gotten dumber and dumber. For instance, when I blogged about being back in Milwaukee, Adsense thought it appropriate to link to a Milwaukee Gay Singles Website. Now, no matter how much the 12 year olds who visit this site wish, I am not gay and I definitely don’t think that Milwaukee Gay Men are going to be visiting this site in such a massive amount.

Or the main page. Half the time the top ad is about helping Democrats, the rest of the time it is an ad to “Join the Right Wing Conspiracy” or “Help Defeat Liberals.”

So here is my plea Google: Wisen Up. There is more than enough information on my blog about who I am and what I am about, so use some of that engineering wisdom you have and stop directing people to websites for the Milwaukee Gay Community.

Of course, everything I discussed in this entry will influence the AdSense overlords even more, but at least it will be well deserved.

Open Source Playboy

Eoban posted the above screen shot when he was downloading Firefox awhile back. Turns out, Playboy likes to use Open Source Software so much that they host an official mirror of the Mozilla project, among others.

That’s kinda cool.

New Heavy CDs

August 17th, 2005 at 7:30 am, 3 years ago

I hate the website Heavy.com. I find it abnormally un-entertaining and way too mtv-ish with content that I can find just about anywhere else in a much more accessible form. The entirely flash interface is horrid. But I love the work they do! And I love the music they put in their “Heavy Radio.”

Every month I receive a CD entitled “Heavy.com Sumosonic.” It has _great_ music on it! Dance, Techno, Rock, Rap, and Underground Hip-Hop just to name a few. It is straight out of New York, and you can try out a disk for one month for free by checking out Heavy’s website. The price is great and you get to listen to artists that you may or may not have heard of, but you will in the future!

One I want to focus on is by Adam Green, entitled “Bunny Ranch.” I recommend you check it out on iTunes. It is short, but the guy sounds a lot like They Might Be Giants. His top song on iTunes is entitled Jessica, a humorous song about Jessica Simpson.

But can it run OSx86

August 17th, 2005 at 5:55 am, 3 years ago

Alright, I have the VMWare image of Apple Mac OS X for the x86 Architecture. Yet, just like everyone warns, it requires SSE2 to run. Bah! I guess I will just have to stick it out until I can afford a Mac (or until Pear PC gets fast enough). Bah!

Speaking of affording a Mac. My sister is getting a 12 Inch Powerbook over the next week or so using my student discount. She has been having wrist problems and needs something to type on during class, so she has been saving up and is going to buy one. Good for her!
