History, as written by those who won

Ex-Nazi SS Members were convicted to life in prison in Italy for a massacre of more than 500 villagers in northern Italy that happened 60+ years ago. All of them are 80. Now what the hell does this prove? Now I am not defending what they did, but seriously people? War crimes that happened in that era need to leave us. What happened during that time was Horrible, but it was an inhumane act that happened because that was the idea of the time. Each and every one of us is capable of doing what those people did, if brainwashed correctly. Let these guys live out their days with the knowledge of what they did. They are no threat to the public.

And yes, the headline is misleading. Italy was allied with Germany in WWII, although those on trial were German SS.

Hmm, so you’re basically saying that we should let people who committed terrible atrocities go free because of their age and the fact that the 1940s were a different time period? What if someone murdered someone here in the U.S. 50 years ago? Should they go free because we should just “forgive and forget” the past? I don’t see the logic in what you’re saying. Trials are solely *about* incidents which happened in the past, and people should be held accountable for their abhorrent doings.

I am not denying that they are in fact no threat to the public, because they most likely aren’t. However, that’s no reason not to try somebody. O.J. Simpson was probably no threat to the public after he savagely murdered Nicole and Ronald Goldman, so should someone like him not be held accountable for their wrongs?

I’m claiming that war in itself is an atrocity (which can be justified). I’m sure the allied forces did some shitty stuff during WWII. There is no rule of law while a war is going on. There WAS rule of law 50 years ago in the US, there was rule of law when the OJ Simpson trial was going on.

If the Axis powers had won, I’m sure that atrocities that the Allied forces committed would be punished.
